   Once you step through the door of your Paris apartment, you’re no longer a tourist. You’re part of the neighborhood. Your name is on the mailbox. The bakery clerk recognizes you when you come in to buy your baguette. The grocer helps you select the ripest melon.

You take the city at a leisurely pace. No need to hurry through museums and monuments. You sit by the Seine and read. You meet other travelers and invite them over for wine and hors d’oeuvres. If you’re so inclined, you create gourmet dinners at home, using fresh produce from the open air market. Hemingway once lived here and walked these streets. Now you do.

Notre Dame and the Two Islands

Behind the Cathedral of Notre Dame is Ile Saint Louis, shown here to the right.  This tiny island was an uninhabitable swampy pasture until the early 1600s when a farsighted real estate developer talked Louis 13th into allowing him to build five bridges connecting to the right and left banks of the Seine.

Today its quiet mansions cater to the ultrarich and famous, and at the same time, it's also one the best places in Paris for an ice cream cone and a picnic by the water.
